US work visa holders are more productive than US citizens says report
April 29 2009 by Ranjan Chakraborty
New research from Jennifer Hunt, an economics professor at McGill University, suggests that foreigners working in the US on skilled worker visas or on student visas are more productive than US citizens.
Hunt looked at factors such as whether the immigrants have launched patents, contributed to major conferences and published books or papers. She also looked at what they earned and concluded that the highest achievers moved to the US on temporary highly skilled work visas (H-1B) or to train or study in the US.
In addition, those who moved to the US as legal permanent residents performed as well as those who were born in the US.
Hunt explained that her finding support calls for the number of skilled work visas to be maintained or increased to help the US economy. She said, “firms, universities and teaching hospitals are successful in attracting and selecting immigrants who remain in the United States to outperform natives, thereby likely increasing US total factor productivity.”
Hunt said she attributed the higher achievement to the tendency to study in more lucrative fields, along with the fact that many of them were educated to an extremely high level.
