Vince Cable revealed debate over UK immigration cap
July 28 2010 by Liam Clifford
Business Secretary, Vince Cable, has admitted that the UK immigration cap that has been introduced has caused some "debate" within the cabinet.
Although he added
that there was "no conflict" within the government over the issue, he did admit
that "a debate is taking place."
Speaking at the British trade delegation
taking place in India at the moment, Cable stated, "There clearly is a debate
taking place. It's a grown-up debate about how these rules should be
administered and I have a perspective, which I bring to India as the Business
Secretary and president of the Board of Trade, wanting to encourage trade and
inward investment."
This suggests that Cable is keen to ensure that the
UK immigration department limits its restrictions on people wanting to work in
the UK or start companies in the UK. Several trade bodies have already expressed
their anger towards the new limits, which could make it more difficult for
businesses to hire foreign talent to fill skills gaps emerging within the UK
workforce.
Cable concluded, "Business is clear we want Britain to be open
for business. We want flexibility and we want these regulations, when they come
in, to be administered with a light touch"
