Would you leave Wales with a work visa?

An increasing number of teachers from Wales are packing up their belongings and heading off abroad to work in South Africa, Australia, Canada and other locations that offer an attractive lifestyle and good job opportunities.

According to Wales-based recruitment firm Teachers International Consultancy, the number of teachers opting to broaden their horizons with a work visa will increase in the coming years. This is a result of expected redundancies as Welsh authorities reorganise schools in response to funding problems and falling pupil numbers.

Andrew Wigford, the firm’s director, said: "A lot of these schools abroad are crying out for well trained teachers and Welsh teachers are particularly popular.” He continued, “when they go for their first teaching job abroad, a lot of people say they wish they had known about it sooner."

International schools often offer great opportunities for teachers as pupils studying in South Africa, the US and many other countries often have a better attitude to their studies than in the UK.

Wigford explained, “They’re more motivated, more eager to learn and they place more emphasis on their own education. For them, education is more of a means to an end rather than something they have to do.”
