Work in South Africa and wear the shirt
The International Marketing Council (IMC) of South Africa has launched ‘Football Fridays’, where people that live and work in South Africa are encouraged to wear the football strip of their favourite team instead of the usual office or school wear.
Paul Bannister, head of the IMC said: “We are encouraging everyone to adopt Football Friday and to wear the shirt of their favourite team. Obviously, we'd prefer it if their favourite team were the national team.”
The move was made in an effort to help drum up support and enthusiasm for the upcoming 2010 Fifa World Cup, which with only 38 Fridays remaining, is looming increasingly close.
A new free ring tone is also set to be released to help the South African population learn the national anthem.
Bannister said: "Soccer is the most popular game of the country, but many South Africans don't know the anthem to support their team because it's written in five languages.”
Peter Kwele, the SABC 2010 promoter said : “We started the Football Fridays campaign as early as 2005 where we travelled and followed Bafana Bafana to wherever they played and made sure that we bring the fans into the stadiums wearing their green and gold (the team’s colours). It is good to see that this is now going into the workplace as well and we are continuing with that support.”
