Younger people increasingly looking to work in Australia, Canada
July 21 2010 by Liam Clifford
The trend for moving abroad to find work has passed to a younger generation, according to analysts.
Expats were once mainly experienced, middle-agers who had become
disenchanted with the UK and were looking for a better work-life
balance and greater opportunities working in Australia, Canada or the
US. Now it seems that more and more young people are also looking for
these things and are increasingly willing to take the plunge and apply
for that Australian work visa.
Siobhan Cummins from global HR firm ORC Worldwide has noticed the trend.
She explained that working overseas has become a common practice,
“Working abroad is no longer a specialist field but is almost expected
as a standard part of working life.”
There are many routes to working abroad, including intra-company
transfers. "Many companies offer placements abroad on their graduate
schemes and know that providing opportunities overseas will build their
reputation as good managers of young talent," explained Cummins. She
added that young people are being given far more opportunity to work
abroad these days.
Another expert, David Reed of recruitment agency Expat Recruitment, says
the trend for looking for work in Australia and other English-speaking
countries is a direct result of the recession and the lack of work
opportunities in the UK.
