Democrats in the US have abandoned clauses in new immigration legislation that include allowing gay couples to sponsor visas in order to make the laws more palatable to Republicans. 

MPs have announced that interpreters who supported British efforts in Afghanistan will be granted UK visas allowing them to live in the UK for five years.

Six hundred interpreters who have worked with the UK military on the front line for one year or more will have the right to live and work in the UK. A spokesperson at Downing Street stated that they would have the option to remain in Afghanistan or ‘make a new start in Britain’. 

The US is taking positive steps in its immigration policies, including provision of a pathway for undocumented migrants to gain their visas and remain in the US legally. 

The Australian Taxation Office will be reviewing the information of over 1 million Australia visa holders and Australian immigrants to check for fraud, and for immigrants working without the right paperwork or breaching tax laws. 

The latest report from Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) has highlighted key weaknesses in UK Immigration processes which harm children and separate families.

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has spoken out against US immigration policy, stating that, “We have a strange immigration policy for a nation of immigrants.”

Around 40% of ‘illegal immigrants’ in the US did not enter the country illegally, but rather overstayed their tourist, student, or work visas.
