Below is a brief overview of some of the main categories of non-immigrant visas:
- Category B-1 is for temporary business visitors who want to train, negotiate contracts or attend meetings. It is valid for up to six months.
- Category E visas like the E1 and E1 are for Treaty Traders and Investors – applicants from countries with which the US maintains a treaty of friendship and commerce. They are granted for an initial period of two years and are intended to facilitate investment in or substantial trade with US companies.
- Category H2-A allows US employers to recruit foreign nationals for temporary agricultural posts that can’t be filled by US workers. USCIS usually grants a stay of one year, which may be extended. The H2-B program makes similar provisions for temporary non-agricultural work.
- The L1-A visa allows a US company to bring a manager or executive into the USA from an affiliated foreign office, for a period of up to three years. A foreign company can also use this visa for the purpose of establishing a US office.
- Category P visas are for athletes, artists and performers. An individual athlete may remain in the US for up to five years on a P-1A visa. Visa P-1B is for internationally recognized entertainment groups and is valid for up to one year.
