Ghana Visa

Applying for a Ghanaian visa is necessary for foreign nationals of most countries.

Ghana permits candidates from several African countries and a small selection of Asian countries to visit for a short period without the need to apply for a visa.

However, in all other cases, making a visa application is an essential requirement for all those who intend to visit or immigrate to Ghana for any length of time.

Types of Visa for Ghana

In Ghana, immigration services allow nationals of ECOWAS countries (Economic Community of West African States) to enter Ghana without applying for visas. This courtesy is also extended to nationals of Egypt, Hong Kong, Kenya, Mauritius, and Singapore.

In addition, those candidates entering Ghana only en route to another final destination may enter the country without a transit visa if they will depart within 24 hours and they are in possession of tickets and seat reservations for their onward travel.

In these circumstances, passengers must not leave the airport transit zone. Beyond these concessions, all applicants wishing to travel to the country will need to be in possession of a valid permit for Ghana.

In Ghana, visas for short stay durations are issued as either a tourist visa, or a business visa.

Ghana Tourist visa

In Ghana, visa applications for tourist visas will normally result in a Ghanaian visa which is valid for three months from the date of issue.

However, it is important to note that the actual length of time that a successful applicant is permitted to stay in Ghana is at the discretion of airport officials.

Those applying for Ghanaian visas of this type are only guaranteed entry clearance for a period of one month.

Candidates applying for a Ghanaian visit visa must be able to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Applicants must supply a valid passport from their country of residence. All passports must be valid for a minimum of six months.
  • Applications must be accompanied by passport photographs along with completed and signed copies of the appropriate application form.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate sufficient financial support for the duration of their trip. This can be supplied in the form of bank statements.
  • Applications must also include copies of airline tickets or a holiday itinerary.

Ghana Business visa

In Ghana, business visas are granted in a similar manner to travel visas with the same duration and the same approach to an applicant’s permitted length of stay.

Ghanaian business visas follow the same principle as a UK business visit visa and business visas in a wide range of destinations in that they are designed for people relocating to Ghana for a temporary period in order to engage in business activities.

Like UK business visas, this type of entry clearance does not constitute work authoristion and unlike a work permit, applicants may not be paid, or engage in employment during their time in the country.

The duration of a Ghanaian business visa is the same as that outlined above for the tourist variant with the exception that a multiple entry permit can be granted with a validity of one year. 

In addition to the requirements of a Ghana visitor visa, applications for business permits will need to provide the following:

  • A letter from the relevant company in the applicant’s country of residence. This letter must give details of the proposed duration and purpose of the trip and must commit to covering any expenses incurred by the applicant.
  • An invitation letter from the host company in Ghana.

Processing Times and Fees

Although both processing times and fees are subject to change for any visa service, visas for Ghana can usually be issued within four working days.

However, this period may be affected by factors such as the nationality of the applicant. In addition, prices are also subject to change.
